If
you enjoy traversing trails, hiking through canyons, or simply walking
in the park, the use of walking sticks will make the adventure much
safer and easier on your body. Throughout Europe, walking sticks
are much more prevalent than here in the U.S., and on any Volksmarch
or hiking tour, you will see many hiking poles made from wood or
aluminum. Many even use their winter ski poles as walking sticks
during all the other seasons.
Walking sticks will help to prolong the life of your back and knees,
absorbing the shock and giving you extra balance when crossing ravines.
Here are just a few of the benefits of walking sticks:
Keep your balance when:
· Crossing creeks, rivers or streams
· Climbing hillsides
· Crossing shale or gravel
· Carrying heavy loads
· Resting en route
Help you maneuver:
· To break or prevent a stumble
· Crossing trees that have fallen across the trail
Walking sticks reduce stress on your back, knees, feet
and legs
· Reduces shock on knees when going downhill
· Takes the pressure off your back and hips, especially when
traversing uphill
· Provides extra power and balance in all your maneuvers
Other uses you might not think of!
· To prop up your backpack while you try to get something
out of it
· Pushing aside spider webs and foilage
· Center or side pole for a tarp
· Self defense!!
When you are choosing the height of your walking sticks, keep these
measurements in mind as a general rule of thumb: If your height
is less than 5'7" use 48" walking sticks, between 5'7"
and 5'10" use 54", and over 5'10' use 59".
