A
walking staff is different from a typical walking cane or stick
in a couple of ways, both in its history and its function.
The walking staff, or hiking staff, has been used ever since human
beings have walked upright. A five to seven foot sturdy wooden pole,
the walking staff was used by all people in mountainous areas. Carrying
a walking staff around allowed them to climb up and downhill with
skill and speed.
Today, people are still using the walking staff for hiking and
other wilderness activities. The reason that a walking staff is
extended in length is for stability. When you step off a rock outcropping
larger than the average step, a walking staff will assist you almost
like an extra long third foot! The length of a walking staff allows
hikers to reach out ahead of them and increase your balance in a
safe, downward step.
While many people search out a stick from the woods when they need
one, a specifically marketed walking staff is a sure bet and can
be a lot more interesting! It is hard to find just the right thickness,
weight and height for a walking staff. But if you have the time,
and there are many dry sticks along the ground, it can also be a
fun hunt!
Because most hiking injuries occur while traveling downhill, a
walking staff combined with the skill to use it properly can drastically
reduce your risk of falling and getting hurt.
One of the most valued gifts you could give to an avid hiker or
walker, a walking staff will be adored by almost any outdoor enthusiast.
Especially a walking staff made from straight grained woods such
as fir, spruce, cherry, walnut, oak or ash. Find a walking staff
with carved designs, or one with the natural knots from the piece
of wood it was fashioned from! Heads can be carved directly into
a shaft, or a mounted feature carved separately from matching or
contrasting material.
