People
use canes for several different reasons. Some people use them temporarily
after a minor injury and some people use them permanently. We tend
to associate canes with the elderly, but they are used by people
of all ages. Anyone who needs extra support while walking can benefit
from the use of a cane, regardless of their age. Canes are available
in many sizes and styles to meet every need. For example, a taller
individual would need a long cane and a heavier person would need
a heavy duty cane. Someone who has balance issues would benefit
from a quad cane. Whatever your particular support need, there is
a cane available to meet it.
There are some signs that will let you know when you should start
considering the use of a cane. When you begin to have problems keeping
your balance or bearing your weight, it is a good time to consider
getting a cane. If you are compensating in inappropriate or harmful
ways such as holding on to furniture or walls, that is another sure
sign that it is time. Improper posture to compensate for one-sided
weakness can cause back or hip pain due to poor body alignment.
A cane can help to relieve these problems.
You won’t have to sacrifice your keen sense of style to use
a cane. They are available in so many styles that you are sure to
find one that compliments you. Whether you like the classic and
graceful look of wood or the elegant look of fabric, you can find
a cane that suits you well. They are available in every color that
you can imagine and they have countless patterns available as well.
Using a cane is not that difficult. It will come naturally, for
the most part, but there are some basic guidelines that will make
it easier for you. If you have one leg that is weaker than the other
or is injured, you should hold your cane with the hand opposite
of that leg. This will allow you take more weight off the weaker
leg. If you are using the cane for balance only, then you can hold
it in whichever hand that feels the most comfortable. When using
a cane to climb stairs, the rule is "up with the good, down
with the bad". So, in climbing the stairs step first with the
cane and the good foot and follow with the weaker side. When going
down the stairs, step first with the bad foot and follow with the
cane and the good foot. Additionally, keep your free hand on the
railing.
We all need extra support at one time or another in our lives.
A cane may be the perfect accessory to provide that support for
you. It will allow you to keep your independence at the same time.
When purchasing a cane, make sure that it suits you well. Find one
that appeals to sense of style as well as one that fits properly.
If you are tall, you will want to get a long cane. If you are short,
you may need the cane to be cut to size. These are important details
because they will ensure your overall comfort when using the cane.
After all, the reason for using the cane is to help you to be more
stable, balanced and comfortable. You’ll be amazed at how
well a cane does the job!
