Hiking
poles are becoming very popular these days. In fact, avid hikers
swear by them. They can help you to get through rough terrain with
ease. They also make uphill climbs more manageable and create safer
downhill climbs. They come in several styles and the type that you
use will greatly depend on the weather and overall conditions of
your hike.
Another trend that is rising among hikers is the use of two poles
instead of one. It makes sense that if one stick helps to ease the
load on the knees and provides an upper arm a workout, then two
would be even better. Using two poles looks much like skiing but
provides a great deal of support
Hiking with two poles has several advantages. First of all, it
takes some of the weight off of your knees and hips. It also gives
you a great upper-body workout to go with the one you are getting
for your legs and feet. And of course, it helps with balance. The
poles can also be used for many other conveniences. For example,
you can wedge them between rocks to form a seat. You can also use
them to fend off animals. Another great use for these handy poles
is to create an a-frame tent with a tarp.
There are disadvantages, however, to using two poles. When hiking
in rocky terrain, there may be times when you must climb up and
down using both hands and both feet. This can prove extremely difficult
while you are lugging around hiking poles. The best thing to do
in this type of situation is to toss the poles ahead of you and
then climb up, or down, without them. (Just be sure not to loose
them!) You can also hand them to a hiking companion while you climb.
Hiking poles can be made of either wood or metal. Some hikers swear
by the traditional wooden pole, either prepared before the hike
or found during the trek. Carving, beading, and other decorations
are optional but encouraged for a style that is all your own. It
also helps them to be more recognizable, so that you can easily
pick out your own stick.
Metal poles also have some great features. A lot of them are very
high-tech. Metal poles provide great shock absorption, are lightweight
and resistant to breaking. They also come in many stylish metallic
colors. One of the greatest things about metal hiking poles is that
many of them are collapsible. They can easily be shortened to fit
in your pack, leaving your hands free to grip the rocks.
Hiking poles are a convenient tool to have with you on any trek
up the mountain whether long and difficult or short and easy. They
offer support and help to ease your burden along the way. Whether
you choose wood or metal, you will be glad to have one with you
when you’re on the trail.
