Because
canes and walking sticks have been made, sold and used for centuries,
there is a large number of collectors interested in the history
and categories of antique canes.
Antique canes are collected by museums, hired historians and individual
enthusiasts alike. Canes were a highly fashionable item in the 17th,
18th and 19th centuries, often boasting of handles made with precious
metals and jewels, or intricately carved in hard woods. There are
thousands out there, existing as genuine examples of social history
in both Europe and America.
In general, collectors of antique canes consider their prized possessions
to be categorized into three areas. They are: decorative, folk art
and system canes. It may be difficult to label when it comes to
individual antique canes, but these basic groups are the best way
to identify the varying uses of canes in history.
1. The decorative antique cane was mainly, as the name implies,
built for aesthetic purposes. In its purest form, the decorative
cane was a fashion accessory of the socially elite and gentility.
Formal, decorative antique canes can be found crafted from ivory,
silver, gold, jewels, porcelain, enamel and even glass. Always exotic
and impressive!
2. Folk art antique canes were also made with aesthetic appeal in
mind, but more for the artist than the user. The craftsmanship is
the main impression, more so than the carrier of the cane. Most
of these antique canes are beautifully carved, both handle and shaft,
and do not have a ferrule.
3. System canes, also known as gadget canes, are the most highly
desired category of antique canes among collectors today. Inspiring
interest even today, system canes were a very popular item during
the 18th and 19th centuries. In fact, more than 1500 patents for
gadget canes were applied for during this time. The basic characteristic
of a system cane is some type of hidden compartment or use. Physicians
carried canes with hidden scalpels and syringes. Other canes held
a sword, whiskey flask and shot glass, or other dual purpose item.
